For my research I’m going to look at other songs and music videos and compare them.

The first two songs I compared are these two:

Lil peep- the bright side


This video is very dark, its got mostly grey and black backgrounds, it has clips from being on stage but theres also just a lot of clips of him doing things, some from behind and some from right infront of him, it changes a lot, i really like this video and i like the collection of differnt shots of him doing simple every day things, it seems like a really good video but if you look in to it more theres clips there were filmed in a place anyone could do it unlike in other peoples videos where they film in big houses or fancy places. lil Peep used a lot of video that looked really good and alternative for example this one:






this is just a 5 second shot but it's filmed in a hotel hallway, all that happens in this clip is lil peep walks in to a hotel room. this shot is very white and colourless and i think this is why it blends in with the rest of the video so well. i think it's just such a weird shot but i like that they made it fit in the video and it looks really good.










Post Malone - Go Flex








this video is really interesting, it starts of like its a mini movie then suddenly it all changes andits just him sitting alone playing the guitar making the video very personal and friendly, the rest of the video is clips of him dancing and singing and some clips of a pretty girl on a car, i really like this i think its very simple and relaxing. although its a song about someone showing off how much money they have it's very calm and catchy.







on this shot its very simple, post is dancing and signing his song but what makes this shot so different and extra is that its on a hill in the middle of nowhere with some old ruins and an expensive car with a girl sat on it. post has decided to show off by showing how simple this all is to him but it's so expensive and hes trying to show the audience he has a lot of money and hes rich.


there are a lot of similarities in these videos with the fact their both mostly made up of clips of the artist from different angles

I have changed my idea so i am starting my research again

for my research i am going to use 5 different channels to look in to many different things that will help inform me and help me during this project i have also looked in to things just so i know more about media and cameras.

for my research i am going to compare two different point of view tings, one film and another tv episode to see how different they are made.




film-

as above so below




this film is good film, it's about someone trying to find the philosophers stone, she goes through the catacombs of Paris and finds hell. the way the film is done is amazing i like the fact that they were only in the gates of hell because they thought that was what was happening. as about so below is a very interesting phrase, i have been looking more and more in to this and did some research on it as it can mean to much and so little, it was used my witches and devil worshippers but also can be used by anyone. it means that what is happening above wherever that may be, it could be us walking around earth it could mean in a spiritual level above, this will happen below weather the below is earth or the below is hell you never really know as the phrase is different to everyone and their view of it. the film is mostly in point of view but this is said to be achieved by a camera one person is holding and carrying around and peoples head cameras that are shown in the film as just lights so i am very interested in to how it was actually filmed. after watching some behind the scenes clips i can see that there were cameras that could wrap around someones head but only one person at a time could wear and there was a big bag attached to it but this is a very good way to get good shots.

"It uses themes in many different ways (for example: religion is used in two ways) and it harbours a massive concentration on rationality vs. irrationality."
This quote says about how the film uses religion and different techniques to make the film seem scary and it tries to make the audience think about whats happening and whats not and what is a rational and what isn't. they have done this by having most of the film happen, all of the bad things happen because they expect it to, i want the opposite in my short film so i am looking in to this and I'm going to see how they made it seem like lots of bad was coming, how they put in all of the foreshadowing but only the bits you don't notice until their connected to something. for example near the start of the film they go in to the main catacombs and see a sign that says "the dead will rise at the sound of the horn" at the point you see it you think nothing of it until you hear a horn, connect the things and get scared. I want to re create something like this and although you have to be really invested in the film to make this connection i thought it was really clever and it really inspired me. 


i really like this film although some scenes it is obvious that their talking to a camera and its edited like a conversation between two people when really it was filmed at different points.

from all my research in to this film and how it was filmed i found out that it was hard to film it as there weren't really sets it was all other than a few shots filmed under Paris, they had to do many safety checks before filming but they managed to film almost entirely down there in the creepy catacombs. how they achieved a good a realistic point of view film.they did it through many takes, repeating takes and scenes many times to get everyone views and they edited a lot of different things.


Looking at this film has really helped me to see about lots of different things that are going to effect my final product, looking at the point of view and how they did it will really help in the production of my film and has helped me to think of getting a go pro and attaching it to the main characters head. I am happy with this research and i am confident it has helped me.

TV show episode-

Always Sunny In Philadelphia episode 6 series 11 'Being Frank'




This whole episode is filmed in the point of view of frank a character. i think they did this very well by including his thoughts and feeling and showing what he's doing in great detail. They did this episode in a very interesting way as it is the view from his eyes or it's meant to be and i haven't ever seen something that has their thoughts in it and i think it really helps you to think and feel like him making the point of view aspect of the episode even better.




i have been looking in to how they did this episode and how it was shot.







This is the start of the episode, it shows from franks point of view even going as far as to include how much he needs his glasses then to have his thoughts and feelings said out loud. my favotie bit of this that i would love to do something like is the mirror bit, you can tell it's edited but its such a clever thing that i want to know how they did and i would like to replicate it in my video. the episode includes a lot of weird effects as he passes out or starts seeing things. i really like how they created this whole episode, they even went as far as putting the camera really low down so it looks like its at franks height.

i really like both of these point of view medias but they are both very different in the way they are filmed and how it is represented. in franks episode it is shown from his eyes, it has his thoughts feelings and worries included where as in the movie it is shot from a camera someone is holding or from head cameras. these are both really good ideas and show different things, one is more personal than the other making a true connection with the actor making them know what the other characters don't and giving an insight to his life whereas on the other one it is less person they repeatedly say how its just camera being used and it show the head cams being set up, i like how it shows shots from head height as it makes the viewer feel like it's them experiencing it with the other characters and it makes them feel like involved as they are looking around and they are listening with the others. these are both very different feelings you get from each media, one makes you have a connection to a character and feel what they are and another makes you have a connection to all the characters and the situation more as your not concentrating on the one character more. i really like the way franks episode is filmed so i am going to record from point of view a bit and maybe have their thoughts of feelings in there but i am also going to film like in as above so below and just have a camera the same height as everyone and see what they see.


Looking at this episode has really helped me, i have used it to see how to make a pov scene seem like it really is from their eyes so i learnt to do things like show their arms a lot and what their holding. this research has really helped me and i have learnt a lot that i can use in my final product. i am confident that looking in to this has helped me.

analysis of different shots and shot types in our brother by charlie mcdonnell

this is a medium shot, it has been edited to look like old footage by changing the colours slightly and making it a different size. this is very clever and it really helps to explain the show. This is in  hospital so you can tell hes not well, hes wearing hospital clothes, hes got a bandage on his head so you know hes injured it makes the audience worry about him. 

This is a medium shot and is used to capture both individuals and their facial expressions.  They are not looking at eachother while they walk to show it's awkward for them. the guy is wearing a nice t-shirt and  a fancy coat while she has her hair down, is wearing a black top with a simple patten but with a long sleeved black top to make her seem more alternative and more effected by the incident than the other guy. 

This is an establishing shot, it is used to show where they are and where their going, it really sets the scene. the scene is set at day time and it's bright so it shows it's slightly nice and calm but they are at a graveyard so it makes it sad.  the girl is wearing full black making her stand out where as he looks casual like a normal person.

This scene shows how they changed, the girl s wearing black but you can see she is dressed formally to see how she's changed where as he is wearing sloppy casual clothes and doesn't look like he's doing too good. this is set in a kitchen to show it's personal and they are happy being close together showing they are family or close friends. 

Looking at this short film has helped me to see what different shots are commonly used and i have learnt to only keep important things and important scenes if not the film will be too long and unnecessary. I have also learnt to look at outfits, mise en scene and more in closer detail, looking in to this film has really helped me to develop mine.

another thing i looked in to was the first camera to be made and who made it when i found this really interesting video about the first camera to be made and who it was made by. 

I found out form this that the first film camera was made by louis le prince but as he was travelling home to get his invention before going to show it in new york so he would be known for this invention he dissapeared and three years later thomas edison made another prototype that was simmlar to louis's  but as his pattent for his invention was for a camera with 2-9 lenses as he wasn't allowed to patent a one lense camera as that had already been invented. as louis went missing just before showing his invention to the world he was forgotten to the world and altough his son tried to fight that his dad has made the first motion film and the case went on for awhile it was eventually dropped and he was one again forgotten. 

When Prince first made his design it had 9 lenses so it could take many pictures at a simmlar time so it formed a moving picture when played fast but eventually he figured out how to make a one lense camera that you could manually make work by spinning something on the side and he invented the film that could withstand the amount of photos that would have to be taken, i think it's so interesting how he made his camera and figured it out, his first video is only a small clip of his family walking around. this is the first clip ever shot on a film camera. 

I have looked in to this and written about it because i think every media student should know about the first camera and who invented it, we work with cameras every day and yet most don't know how they started, i know this seems a little of topic and unnecessary but i thought it interesting and would help improve my knowledge on technology i use daily. the first camera invented was invented in 1888 and here i am almost 200 years later using a camera smaller than my hand to film, it's really helped to teach me how cameras came around and i think it's good to look in to this. 

Looking in to this helped me to see how film cameras were made and it makes me see how lucky i am to have access to things like the go pros and my dslr, i wouldn't say this helped in the production of my film but it helped me to see some background of cameras and made me more excited to use them and make this film. 

Channel Three: articles

Definition of a short film: 

I had a conversation of what makes a short film, well a film is "a story or event recorded by a camera as a set of moving images and shown in a cinema or on television." but what makes it a short film, well obviously it's the same but shorter but how short. Luke said he thought 3 mins was good for a short film but i thought 40 mins or less sounds like a short film as most films are nearly double that so i looked in to it and found out that most places say a short film is 40 mins or less but most competitions say they have to be 5 mins or less. i think this is really interesting but a good thing to think about. 

For my film i have to look in to serial killers and their mannerisms so my actor can portray this so it fits to the part.

From this article i learnt a lot of different things for example i learnt that srerial killers oftern have an obsesstion with fires and lighting them so i am going to have a small clip where you can see him setting a tiny fire with matches so it's seen but no one thinks much of it.

Although from this i learnt a lot of different things about murders and it was all very interesting it was mostly about how they talk not about how they behave and as there is no script for my film i can not use different key things like lying or manipulating so i have to keep searching for more behaviours that are stereo-typically linked to murders that my actor can do.

this article said about the trait of killers being very vain and narcissistic so i am going to include clips of him doing his hair to show he is very interested in his looks and wants to look great.

i think its really interesting to look in to serial killers and ive learnt a lot that will help me out when directing my actor and it helps me to learn what the include in my film to hint and foreshadow the ending.

I watched the new ted bundy film from a suggestion from my teacher but after watching the whole film i didn't see much that would help with my product. i have learnt to use more foreshadowing that i can connect but other than that this film was mostly a love story, i thought it interesting how he denied all of the charges until he said where a woman's head went but other than that the murders and killing aspects of ted bundy weren't shown at all in the films it only showed the evidence against him. i guess if i want to know more about bundy i would want to watch the ted bundy tapes but i have watched many videos about him and what he did and how. there is a quote from him i really liked though and i am thinking of putting in my film as it really sums up what i am trying to tell the audience. “Society wants to believe it can identify evil people, or bad or harmful people, but it's not practical. There are no stereotypes.” I think this is so interesting as it is so true, stereotypes are used everyday by everyone without people even noticing, when you walk down the street and it's dark who are you going to be more afraid of a teen in trackies or a man in a suit. but i want to tell people that anyone could be dangerous you shouldn't trust anyone anywhere, this seems a little insane i know but there are so many crimes happening and look at all the people bundy killed because he didn't meet the stereotype of a killer, he was loved by woman everywhere they all trusted him because he didn't 'look' like a killer. My whole film is to show people anyone can kill, its to help people see beyond stereotypes. i am even going to go as far as to have the main person in my film not show his face, not where clothes that you can stereotype so you can't see who he is and he could be anyone just to prove what this quote is, anyone could hurt you and you can't trust stereotypes. 

This has really helped me in producing my film and directing my actors. the main actor is meant to be a murderer so knowing things about how murders are has helped me to tell him what to do how to act and it has also helped me with my mise en scene as i have learnt things like murders and psychopaths like to set fires a lot and are violent so i'm going to put things like matches and a big knife in different shots, not so it's that obvious but so my target audience will look at it and will connect it all together at the end. Overall this research has helped and I am happy i did it. 


Channel four: found footage of army soldiers

i watched videos from point of view of army soldiers holding guns and what it would look like in real life so i knew how to make my scene where i have a point of view of someone holding and shooting a gun, i found a good video that i am not going to link but i will screen record small clips from it and add it in as there are disturbing scenes near the end of the video.

what i learnt from this video is that the shots are shaky and show the jolts of his steps when he moves, it also shows he doesnt always have the gun up ready to shoot. the footage also shows the jolts back while he shoots from the re-coil. you can also hear the persons heavy breathing.

this has taught me to show the gun moving and waving around as it's being held, it should also show the person walking around and re-coil of the gun when he shoots and i need to record him breathing heavy aswell as show him shaking a bit from being nervous. and i have to remeber normally people wont always show the gun or be holding it up.

This has helped me to see how people act with guns in real life, as the gun is a big part of my film and i have very little idea how to act around them and how to direct my actor having looked in to this has really helped me and now i will make the last scene with the gun look more realistic, i am happy i looked in to this and it has really helped me.

I asked this question because i had a conversation with Luke about how long a short film is and he said 3 minuets was enough but i wondered what others thought as i thought a short film is any film under 40 mins and i have learnt that most people agree with me although i have learnt this is quite an interesting thing to ask people as many have different opinions.

I have realised that making the audience confused throughout the first half of my film is a bad thing to do and i would probably lose my audience so i asked what they thought as this is my strongest way of getting my point across so i asked people and luckily most said they would continue to watch and they said it would intrigue them more.

I was worried some people would be too confused and bored so not watch my final product so i asked them and i have learnt that most people would watch the video and this has made me happy although it is annoying some wouldn't watch it but everyone has different tastes.

Although three people who said they wouldn't watch my video said they would still enjoy it, this is good as i wouldn't want anyone to not enjoy my final product but i know some will. this question has taught me that after watching my video most would enjoy it and it is good to know this.


Channel six: target audience

How I got my target audience is that I put out a small survey asking people how old they are and if they would watch my product, I also thought who this would help the most as the purpose of this video is to show people they need to be careful when walking alone or doing anything so this mostly is aimed at young girls as stereotypically it's young woman who are killed/ kidnapped or assaulted in the streets.


Blumler & Katz' Gratifications Theory

What is the Gratifications Theory?
Blumler & Katz' theory says that all Audiences play an "active role" when using and choosing media. This then means that the audience is able to pick and choose the types of media they consume and they can control the amount of content they see and what information they want to out of articles, movies, stories, feeds and other media products on and off-line. 

This theory also suggests that the audience looks for products that fulfil these needs:

• Information and/or Education: the audience can gain education and knowledge from online products, as well as constant information from programmes such as BBC News and Documentaries

• Entertainment: consumers watch programmes and read articles for entertainment and enjoyment

• Personal Identity: viewers can relate, identify with and like products and role models through media and will often go as far as creating similar values, mimicking and copying characteristics

• Social Interaction: media products create topics of conversation between groups of people, can be linked to personal identity as social interaction through people can change the way they act

• Escapism: media products create an escape from the users everyday life, computer games and action films let viewers escape and imagine what could be classed as "a better world"

How does this apply to my project?

According to Blumler & Katz' Uses and Gratifications Theory, my product appeals to my target audience because it should entertain them as well as inform them therefore they should enjoy this and be attracted towards my final product.


Conclusion 

I have done a lt of research and it a all helped me so much to evolve my idea dan make my final product the best it could be. My reaserch on P.O.V films and shows really helped me to see how I should film mine and age me lots of inspiration, I also think it is so interesting that half of the shots filmed as someones point of view are filmed by a more advanced go pro like device thats slotted on the actors head, I feel using a go pro to film my product really helped and made it seem a lot better than if I were to use a dslr so this research really helped.

My research looking in to short films made me see what short films are normally like, doing this research helped me to see what I need to include or not, I really learnt that you can only use main information there are no filler scenes as it will make it too long and uninteresting, this is why I cut to a lot of scenes after my first storyboards.

looking in to the first film camera helped to keep me inspired throughout the project as I think it's so fun for the camera to go from the and being used to make a very short clip of people walking around to my project of a whole film that should help people.

I looked in to serial killer and there mannerisms this really helped meet do m miss en scene and direct my actor,  learnt from this things like serial killers are see to play with fire a lot, use drugs and have weapons so I included most of these things in my final product but I've put these things in in a subtle way so people don't really link the guy to a killer until the end. I put matches at the side of one shot, had people play with lighters in another. I also got a kitchen knife and wrapped the handle in string until it looked threatening and I used it in the first scene as it was next to him and he picks it up and moves it then later on you see it again at the side of a scene.

When filming I realised I didn't know how to make the gun look realistic and make the shooter seem real so I looked in to P.O.V shots of someone holding a gun and found clips of soldiers so I could see and it really helped me to know how to direct my actor and made me more confident that I can make my final product look more professional.

Doing my questionnaire was really good and learnt a lot from it, if I had negative results I was going to alter my idea to fit my target audience but my ta said they liked my idea and would enjoy it, I learnt from doing this that my idea is good but to keep it under 5 mins as everyone agreed that short films are at the shortest 5 mins.

I looked in to my target audience and who would be most suited to my idea and who it would help the most and this helped me to reach that my target audience is female and aged 17-25, this is a big age gap but I think people in the audience would be the most who might be affected by violence in streets that I want to reduce with my video.


Overall I am very happy with my reassert and how it helped me to produce my final idea and how to film it, direct it and edit it. I am confident in saying the research I did was very helpful and really effected my final product.
